April is over!! So many things were accomplished in April.
First, I completed my first Shelf Challenge! I previewed all the Fiction books with an author whose last name began with "P" and found many interesting books, some by authors very familiar and some not as familiar. Gary Paulsen has written sooo many books, and many are in our library. James Patterson, Katherine Paterson, Richard Peck and Christopher Paolini are all popular authors in this library, as well as Barbara Park, Lisa Papademetriou, and Marci Peschke. Students are the primary beneficiaries of this challenge as I have been able to make new recommendations of the books I reviewed. I did also see some "lonely" books and will be looking to find them a new home for next year. The Shelf Challenge has been an excellent learning experience for me and I will be ready for next year's challenge!
April was also Poetry Month and we used some amazing new technology to help celebrate Poem in my Pocket Day! We used the Aurasma app on our ipads to create "auras" or pictures that can be scanned with the use of the app. When you scan the aura, a student magically appears and reads his/her poem in her pocket! It is "so wicked" as one student exclaimed when she saw it work. (I just love it when students get excited.) If you have the chance come by Gilbert and we will show you this cool technology. If you have a smart phone or other smart technology, download the Aurasma app, join and follow Gilbert Intermediate and scan the picture below to watch an example of our newest technology.
Several classes also Skyped with other students from Weatherford, TX and Wentzville, MO and read poems to each other! It was fun.
Now it is May and we will fly through the rest of the school year!! Let's keep reading!

Shelf Challenge
Challenge. The word excites and frightens me. So when Matthew Winner issued the Shelf Challenge on Twitter I thought "scary, can't do that" but the more I dwelled on the idea, the more it appealed to me. I am new to the Gilbert Intermediate library and I need to learn more about the books I have, so on April 1st I officially began my quest to take the "P" fiction section of the library and "read" the books in 30 days. When I say "read" I decided that would mean I would read the first chapter of each of the books. In reading them, I am finding many of the great books in the library, but also some hidden gems and perhaps some duds. Here are just some of books from the FIC P section of the library. This is truly a challenge!

Book Fair is coming!!
The library is having a Scholastic Book Fair the week of February 25-March 1. There will be lots of new books to buy as well as more of your favorites like Diary of a Wimpy Kid series! You can purchase books from our online book fair too. Just go to http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/gilbertintermediateschool and buy your books online. Online shopping will be available from February 20-March 12.
Great New Technology!
Last week I attended TCEA in Austin, Texas and learned about some great new "technology," aka cool apps to assist teachers and students. I will be talking to library classes about a new app called aurasma this week. The app is free, so download it and join, then follow Gilbert so you can scan "auras" around the campus!
